National Safety Council (NSC) total direct and indirect costs estimates of occupational illness and injuries in 2019 were $171.0 billion. This figure includes lost wages and time, employers’ uninsured costs, medical expenses, administrative expenses, motor vehicle damage, and fire losses. The cost per medically consulted injury was approximately $42,000, excluding property damage (credit: injuryfacts.nsc.org/work/costs/work-injury-costs/).
As one can see, workplace accidents or illnesses can send employer and employee costs through the roof. Employers that have an occupational health service management system in place can not only minimize costs associated with accidents or illnesses but can also minimize disruption in productivity. This means less employee lost time and wages and fewer employer expenses with having to cover the loss of employees (i.e. training other employees or hiring new employees). Having the ability to track and monitor incidents gives companies the upper hand to improve workplace risks and shows employees that their safety and health are the utmost priority.
